A
Affiliate link
An affiliate link is a special link that lets a company know a visitor came from you. If that person completes whatever action the affiliate program pays for, the result can be credited back to you.
In the simplest version: you recommend something, someone follows your tracked link, and you may earn a commission if the required action happens.
Audience
Your audience is the group of people you’re trying to help, reach or serve. It isn’t just “everybody who might buy something.” It’s the people whose questions, problems or goals fit what your content and offers are about.
Automation
Automation means setting up software or a system so a job happens without you doing every small step by hand each time.
A shop sending a receipt, an email service adding a new subscriber or a low-stock warning appearing at the right time are all ordinary examples. The software handles a job. It doesn’t magically take over the business.
B
Backlink
A backlink is simply a link from another website to yours. In SEO, people pay attention to backlinks because useful links from other sites can help search engines discover and understand pages.
C
Commission
A commission is money a company pays you for producing an agreed result. In affiliate marketing that might be a percentage of a sale, a flat payment or, in some programs, a recurring payment.
Conversion
A conversion happens when a visitor does the thing a page is meant to help them do. That might be joining an email list, buying a product, submitting a form or clicking through to an offer.
The word sounds technical. Most of the time it just means: the visitor took the next step we were hoping for.
D
Domain name
A domain name is the address people use to find a website. In opentheatlas.com, that entire address is the domain name.
The domain points people toward the site. It isn’t the website itself, and it isn’t the hosting that stores the website.
E
Email list
An email list is a collection of email addresses from people who have chosen to hear from you. The useful part isn’t owning a list of addresses. It’s having a direct way to reach people who have already said, “Yes, I’m interested.”
H
Hosting
Hosting is the service that stores the files and other pieces that make your website work and makes them available on the internet.
If the domain is the address, hosting is roughly where the site lives. That comparison isn’t perfect, but it gets you close enough to understand what you’re buying.
K
Keyword
A keyword is a word or phrase someone uses when searching. In practice, a keyword can be an entire question. The useful part is not the phrase by itself; it’s what that phrase tells you the person is trying to find.
L
Lead magnet
A lead magnet is something useful you offer in exchange for an email signup. A checklist, worksheet, template or short guide can all be lead magnets if they solve a real enough problem that the right person wants them.
M
Margin
Margin describes what is left after relevant costs are taken away from the money coming in. The exact calculation can vary depending on what someone is measuring, so the surrounding context matters.
N
Niche
A niche is the specific part of a larger market you choose to focus on. It gives the business boundaries: a particular subject, group of people, set of problems or combination of those things.
O
Offer
An offer is the actual deal you’re asking someone to say yes to. A service by itself isn’t necessarily a clear offer until the buyer can understand what they get, what it costs and what happens next.
S
Search intent
Search intent is the reason behind a search—the thing the person is actually trying to understand, compare, find or do. Two searches can mention the same subject while needing completely different pages.
SEO
SEO stands for search engine optimization. In plain language, it is the work of helping useful pages become easier for search engines to discover, understand and show to the right people.
W
Website
A website is the collection of pages, content and functions people reach through a web address. It can hold articles, products, forms, tools, navigation and whatever else the business needs visitors to use.
